Save the Date: Simple Changes Kentucky Derby Party

December 2017

Dear Friends,

Meet Stella!  She is sweet 16, smart and has a delightful personality.  Stella is the newest addition to the Simple Changes herd.

Stella walking up the trail with a rider, leader, two sidewalkers, and instructorStella was kindly donated by her previous owner and is being sponsored by another generous supporter.  Her donor and current sponsor were moved by Simple Changes excellent reputation for horse care and safety, and the desire to help individuals with disabilities.

Adding Stella to our herd helps us serve more therapeutic riders and hippotherapy clients.  Working with her helps students not only learn to ride, but also practice empathy and compassion.  What better way to develop these skills than by helping Stella adjust to her new job?

Woman petting Stella on the neck.Stella’s peaceful nature makes her a perfect fit for many of our newest students.  Simple Changes has partnered with Goodwin House in Alexandria, VA to provide experiential learning for seniors.  The clients come to the barn to observe horse behavior and participate in horse care.  Brushing the horses hones fine motor skills and brings a sense of accomplishment and joy.  But as the clinical social worker at Goodwin House adds: “These activities are more than fun… they’re designed to stimulate memory skills and reduce depression and isolation.”

“I was amazed at the transformation in Mom!” says the son of one senior participant.  “She talks about the horses constantly with her friends and has even put a picture of Stella on her dresser!  She is more engaged and has started doing crossword puzzles again.”

Working together to provide hope and confidence to a community of individuals with special needs – of all ages – is the purpose of Simple Changes.  Not everyone need donate or sponsor a horse like Stella, but every dollar helps us help more.  Please join us in celebrating our students journey toward an independent and joyful life.

Thank you kindly for your generous support.Young boy riding Stella, leaning over to open a mailbox.
